How Often You Should Clean Your Bathroom
Cleaning you bathroom is an important maintenance task of any health household. No matter if you share your house with, dirty roommates, stubborn partner or continuously sick children it is challenging to navigate the age-old question, how often should I clean my bathroom?
Some people find cleaning relaxing, but many of also hate and avoid cleaning where possible.
Bathroom Fabrics: Towels, Flannels, Mats and Fabrics
Fabrics like towels in the bathroom are pretty much a breeding ground for germs, as bathrooms are humid, even a slightly damp material is the perfect for bacteria.
It is essential to make sure your towels and bathrobe have room to be hung, allowing fabrics to dry fast before the next use; this will eliminate some possibility of germs spreading. Installing a towel warmer radiator to hang your towels and robe hook near your radiator are a great way to help dry towels which also have the bonus of a nice warm towel and robe when stepping out of the shower or bath.
The general rule of thumb is to wash towels after every third use and wash your bathmat weekly. Bathroom fabrics should be replaced every few years or replaced when they no longer absorb properly.
If someone in your household becomes sick, you should wash all your bathroom fabrics immediately, and after each use while ill to avoid the risk of spreading the illness to other people. Having your own personal towel can also reduce the risk of spread of illness.
In general, you should stop using shower poufs, body sponges, loafers, bath mitts and all disposable body washing materials. Not only are they made of micro-plastics, which causes harm to the environment, but are a breeding ground for germs. Studies have found some rather dangerous skin infections as a result of not frequently replacing bathroom fabrics.
Toothbrushes
Science provides some frightening studies, as your toothbrush is home to over 100 million living bacteria. Alike most hygiene items in your bathroom, you should keep your toothbrush in a clean, cool and dry spot.
A helpful way to eliminate the spread of germs on your toothbrush is to include lots of closed storage in your next bathroom renovation, such as under-sink cupboards or mirror cabinets to keep your toothbrush and other health products hygienic. If your toothbrush isn’t drying before you want to use it again, it’s time to find a new storage spot.
All in all, an easy way to keep track of how often you should replace your toothbrush, is to bring out a new brush with each season, totalling to four a year. Although if you have been sick, you should start with a new brush after you have recovered.
What Products are Safe for Bathroom Storage?
It is all too tempting to dump every bottle of medicine, beauty and hygiene products in your bathroom. However, most people don’t check if the packaging of these products are suitable for bathrooms and humid conditions.
Be mindful of moist packaging, broken beauty products, deteriorating fragrances, mouldy pages in books and magazines. Instead, opt for products that are hypoallergenic and have a high resistance to moisture and temperature.
So How Often Should You Clean Your Bathroom
A good rule is to give you bathroom a clean at least once a week, and a good deep clean once a month. You should also clean your toilet pan and seat as often as required and if it get dirty. Drying down showering spaces and using a shower cleaning spray after every use is also a good habit to get into to help reduce mould growth on silicone etc.
