Get Help From The Experts

A wetroom is a big task, and not necessarily one for the amateur to undertake. You're going to fare a lot better if you have a plumber who has a lot of experience in the area of wetroom installation. It's also ideal to have a builder who can prepare and construct both the walls and the floor to ensure they're in peak condition. Both your plumber and your builder will be able to advise you and tailor their services to your specific needs. This is especially useful if your wetroom will be an unusual space, or if you want some advice about structural integrity.

Drainage

You're going to need the best drainage to handle the large surface area of water your wetroom will produce. Typically, the location of the drain will be found in the middle of the showering area. It will also be the lowest point of the room so the water is free to roll towards the drain. Your builder may have helped you with your sloped floor, or perhaps you're hoping to achieve this with a preformed wetroom floor. Such preformed wetroom floors can come either as a unit to be sunk into your existing floor, or they'll sit on your floor as a step to achieve the gradient.

Water Proofing, Or Tanking

This one's a big one - you're going to have to make sure your room is effectively sealed. You want to make sure you keep the water in your shower, and that no other rooms in the house unintentionally become wetrooms! This is a process known as 'tanking', and there are a number of Rubberduck Bathrooms kits to help you with this. It's a common myth that tiles and grouting will seal in moisture. Unfortunately, these are permeable and, over time, without protection, they will allow mould and rot to fester. By tanking your wetroom, you'll be installing a liquid chemical agent that dries to
form a solid waterproof barrier between your shower and the outside world. Rest assured, this will prevent the water from leaving your shower.

Ventilation

We all like it hot and steamy, but there's a limit! You're going to need good ventilation to remove the large build up of steam and condensation. The whole room will be full of shower vapour, and without its extraction you're going to be at risk of damp and mould. You also need to protect your electrical equipment (such as lights and electric towel rails) from too much exposure to steam. So, when designing your wetroom, think about your ventilation plans.

Now comes the fun bit - you'll have to choose the look of your wetroom. We're not just talking about the colour of your tiles - there'll be a wide range of fixtures to consider. What will you do for your shower? Perhaps you'll want a wall-mounted shower head, or maybe you'll want to splash out and install a ceiling mounted drench? The choice is yours.
